Effect of geometric disorder on chaotic viscoelastic porous media flows

The flow of viscoelastic fluids in porous media is encountered many practical applications, such as the enhanced oil recovery process or groundwater remediation. Once rate exceeds a critical value flows, an elastic instability with fluctuating field observed, which ultimately transits to more chaotic and turbulence-like structure further increases. In recent study, it has been experimentally shown that this behaviour can be suppressed by increasing geometric disorder model consisting microchannel several micropillars placed it. However, present numerical study demonstrates not always true. We show depends on initial arrangement for mimicking media. particular, we find ordered aligned configuration micropillars, introduction order actually increases dynamics opposed seen staggered micropillars. suggest number stagnation points revealed where maximum stretching microstructure happens. Our findings explanation are perfectly line observed provided experimental study.
